Destination Guides

In-depth information on each destination — what to see, when to go, and how to get there

01. Murchison Falls National Park

Northwestern Uganda 2–4 days recommended

Murchison Falls is Uganda's largest and oldest national park, covering roughly 3,840 square kilometres of savannah, woodland, and riverine forest. Its centrepiece is the dramatic point where the Victoria Nile squeezes through a gap just seven metres wide before plunging 43 metres into the gorge below — a spot Winston Churchill once called "the most spectacular thing in the whole of the Nile's long career."

What to See and Do

  • Game drives: The northern bank is the best area for spotting elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, and Uganda kob. Early morning drives offer the best light and wildlife activity.
  • Boat safari: A three-hour cruise upriver to the base of the falls is a highlight — expect hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife along the banks.
  • Top of the Falls hike: A short, steep walk to the top gives you a close-up view of the Nile forcing itself through the gorge.
  • Budongo Forest: Chimpanzee tracking and forest walks in one of East Africa's largest mahogany forests.

Best Time to Visit

The dry seasons from December to February and June to September offer the best game viewing and road conditions. The wet months bring lush green scenery and fewer visitors but some tracks become difficult.

How to Get There

Murchison Falls is approximately a 5 to 6 hour drive from Kampala via Masindi, or a 1-hour flight from Entebbe to Pakuba or Bugungu airstrips. We arrange both road and air transfers.

02. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Southwestern Uganda 3–4 days recommended

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, dating back over 25,000 years. It shelters roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas — about 460 individuals — making it the single most important place on Earth for the survival of this endangered species.

What to See and Do

  • Gorilla trekking: Permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority for four habituated gorilla families — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Treks take between 2 and 8 hours depending on where the family has moved.
  • Batwa cultural experience: Learn about the forest's original inhabitants and their traditional way of life.
  • Birding: Over 350 species, including 23 Albertine Rift endemics found nowhere else on Earth.
  • Waterfall walks: Guided hikes to waterfalls inside the forest for those who don't trek gorillas.

Best Time to Visit

Gorilla trekking is available year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer easier trails and better photography. Permits should be booked 3–6 months in advance, especially for peak months.

How to Get There

Bwindi is about an 8–9 hour drive from Kampala, or a 1-hour flight to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrips followed by a road transfer. We handle gorilla permits, transport, and lodge booking as a package.

03. Queen Elizabeth National Park

Western Uganda 2–4 days recommended

Queen Elizabeth National Park is Uganda's most popular safari destination, spanning almost 2,000 square kilometres between the Rwenzori Mountains and the Kazinga Channel. It is home to over 95 mammal species — more than any other Ugandan park — and more than 600 species of birds.

What to See and Do

  • Tree-climbing lions: The famous Ishasha sector is one of only two places in the world where lions regularly climb fig trees.
  • Kazinga Channel boat cruise: A two-hour cruise offering close encounters with hippos, buffaloes, elephants, and water birds.
  • Crater lakes drive: Scenic drive through a chain of volcanic craters, many filled with lakes and wildlife.
  • Kyambura Gorge chimpanzees: Track a habituated chimpanzee community in the "Valley of Apes."

Best Time to Visit

The park can be visited year-round, but the dry seasons (January–February and June–September) are best for game viewing, since vegetation is thinner and animals gather near water sources.

How to Get There

About a 6–7 hour drive from Kampala via Mbarara and Bushenyi. Alternatively, fly from Entebbe to Kasese or Mweya airstrip in about an hour.

04. Lake Mburo National Park

Western Uganda, near Mbarara 1–2 days recommended

At just 260 square kilometres, Lake Mburo is Uganda's smallest savannah national park — and one of its most rewarding. It is the only park in Uganda where you can see zebras and impalas, and it is one of the few places in the country where walking safaris and horseback safaris are permitted.

What to See and Do

  • Walking safaris: Guided on foot with an armed ranger — a rare chance to experience wildlife at eye level.
  • Horseback safaris: Ride alongside zebras, giraffes, and antelopes — the only park in Uganda offering this.
  • Boat cruise on Lake Mburo: Spot hippos, crocodiles, and the rare shoebill stork.
  • Night game drives: Look for leopards, hyenas, and nocturnal species.

Best Time to Visit

Lake Mburo is accessible year-round thanks to its well-maintained tracks. The dry months (June–September and December–February) are best for wildlife visibility.

How to Get There

Only a 3–4 hour drive from Kampala — one of the closest parks to the capital, making it ideal for a weekend trip or a stopover en route to Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth.

05. Sipi Falls, Mount Elgon

Eastern Uganda, near Mbale 1–3 days recommended

Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls on the western slopes of Mount Elgon, in eastern Uganda near the town of Kapchorwa. The falls drop at 85, 75, and 100 metres respectively, making the highest of them one of the tallest waterfalls in Uganda. The surrounding highlands offer some of the most spectacular scenery in East Africa.

What to See and Do

  • Waterfall hikes: Guided walks to the base of all three falls, ranging from 1 to 4 hours.
  • Coffee tours: The area produces some of Uganda's finest Arabica coffee. Visit a local farm and see the bean-to-cup process.
  • Abseiling: Descend the 100-metre main falls on a rope — an adrenaline experience with spectacular views.
  • Cave visits: Explore the nearby caves used historically by the local Sabiny people.

Best Time to Visit

Sipi Falls is accessible year-round, but the driest months (June–August and December–February) offer the clearest views of the falls and Mount Elgon.

How to Get There

Approximately a 5-hour drive from Kampala via Mbale, or a 6-hour drive via Jinja and Mbale. We can combine Sipi with a stopover at the Source of the Nile in Jinja.

06. Jinja — Source of the Nile

Eastern Uganda 1–2 days recommended

Jinja sits on the northern shore of Lake Victoria at the point where the world's longest river begins its 6,650-kilometre journey to the Mediterranean. Today Jinja is Uganda's adventure capital, offering the widest range of outdoor activities in the country — from white-water rafting to bungee jumping.

What to See and Do

  • White-water rafting: Grade 5 rapids on the Nile, with full-day and half-day options. Suitable for beginners.
  • Bungee jumping: Take the plunge over the Nile from a 44-metre tower on a disused railway bridge.
  • Source of the Nile boat ride: A gentle cruise to the point where the Nile begins.
  • Kayaking and jet boating: Alternativesto rafting for those wanting something different.
  • Quad biking and horse riding: Explore the Jinja countryside on wheels or hooves.

Best Time to Visit

Jinja is a year-round destination. Rafting conditions are best when water levels are moderate — typically January–February and June–September.

How to Get There

Only a 2-hour drive from Kampala via the Jinja highway. Perfect for a day trip or overnight stay.

07. Zanzibar, Tanzania

Indian Ocean, off Tanzania 4–7 days recommended

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous archipelago off the coast of Tanzania, famous for its powder-white beaches, turquoise water, and centuries-old Swahili culture. The main island — Unguja — is home to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the centre of the Indian Ocean spice trade.

What to See and Do

  • Stone Town: Wander narrow alleys, visit the old slave market, the Sultan's Palace, and the House of Wonders.
  • Spice tours: Visit working spice farms to see how cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla are grown.
  • Nungwi and Kendwa beaches: The northern beaches have the clearest water and best swimming at all tides.
  • Snorkelling and diving: Mnemba Atoll and the surrounding reefs are world-class dive sites.
  • Dhow sunset cruises: Traditional wooden sailing boats offering unforgettable views.

Best Time to Visit

June to October is the dry, cooler season and the best time for beach holidays. December to February is hot and clear. Avoid the long rains of March to May.

How to Get There

Direct flights from Entebbe to Zanzibar take about 2.5 hours, or you can fly via Dar es Salaam. We can combine Zanzibar with a Uganda safari for a beach-and-bush holiday.

08. Dubai, United Arab Emirates

United Arab Emirates 3–5 days recommended

Dubai is one of the most visited cities in the world — a futuristic metropolis rising from the Arabian Desert, where record-breaking skyscrapers sit alongside traditional souks and desert dunes. It is a popular stopover destination for travellers connecting between Africa, Europe, and Asia.

What to See and Do

  • Burj Khalifa: The world's tallest building at 828 metres, with observation decks on floors 124, 125, and 148.
  • Desert safari: Dune bashing, camel riding, and dinner under the stars at a Bedouin-style camp.
  • Dubai Mall and Fountain: One of the largest shopping malls in the world, with an aquarium and the Dubai Fountain show.
  • Palm Jumeirah: The iconic palm-shaped island with luxury resorts and beach clubs.
  • Old Dubai: Abra rides across the creek, gold and spice souks, and the Dubai Museum.

Best Time to Visit

November to March is the coolest and most comfortable period, with daytime temperatures around 25°C. Summer months (June–September) are extremely hot.

How to Get There

Multiple daily flights from Entebbe via Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Doha, or Dubai direct. Flight time is approximately 5–6 hours. We can arrange stopover packages that combine Dubai with your Uganda safari.

09. Rwenzori Mountains

Western Uganda, on the DRC border 7–12 days for summit treks

The Rwenzori Mountains — known as the "Mountains of the Moon" — are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa's most extraordinary mountain ranges. Unlike the volcanic peaks of Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya, the Rwenzori are block mountains formed by tectonic uplift, with permanent glaciers, moss-covered forests, and plant life found nowhere else on Earth.

What to See and Do

  • Margherita Peak: The highest point at 5,109 metres — reached via a 7 to 10-day trek from Nyakalengija.
  • Giant lobelias and groundsels: These strange, otherworldly plants grow only in the Rwenzori's high-altitude bogs.
  • Glacial lakes: Lake Bujuku, Lake Speke, and Lake Elena sit in valleys ringed by glaciers.
  • Shorter treks: 2 to 4-day routes to the lower peaks and huts for those without summit ambitions.

Best Time to Visit

The driest months (December–February and June–August) offer the best conditions. Rain is possible year-round at high altitude, so proper gear is essential.

How to Get There

Trekking starts from the Rwenzori Mountains National Park headquarters at Nyakalengija, about a 6-hour drive from Kampala via Kasese, or a 1-hour flight to Kasese airstrip followed by a short road transfer.
